D15 / The Heart of True Judgment

Day-15 “The Heart of True Judgment”

1. Call to Self-Examination

Beloved in Christ, you are invited to examine their hearts before God. Lent is not only a time of fasting, prayer, and sacrifice; it is also a time of humility and repentance. Matthew 7:1–5 speaks powerfully to our lives.

Jesus says: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” These words are not merely a warning but a spiritual mirror that reveals the condition of our hearts.

2. The Danger of a Judgmental Spirit

Human nature easily falls into the habit of judging others. We often measure others' faults while ignoring our own weaknesses. Jesus describes this with a vivid image: We try to remove a speck from our brother’s eye, while ignoring the plank in our own eye

This teaching reveals a deep truth: judgment often flows from pride rather than righteousness.

When we judge harshly, we assume the place of God. We forget our own need for mercy. We damage relationships and weaken Christian witness. Christ reminds us that God desires humility rather than criticism.

3. The Call to Self-Reflection

Jesus does not say that discernment is wrong. Instead, He calls us first to examine ourselves. True spiritual life begins with asking: What are the planks in my life? Where do I need repentance? What attitudes need transformation?

Lent invites us to remove the plank through sincere repentance, prayer and confession, and surrender to God's grace. When the heart becomes humble, our perspective toward others changes.

4. The Power of Mercy

When we stop judging, we begin to reflect God's mercy.

Christ showed this throughout His ministry: He forgave sinners, He lifted the fallen, and He restored the broken. A Christian who has experienced God's grace cannot easily condemn others. Instead, they respond with compassion, patience, understanding, and love. This is the spirit of the cross that Lent calls us to embrace.

5. Living the Teaching of Christ

To live Matthew 7:1–5 during Lent, we must practice three spiritual disciplines:

  1. Self-examination before criticizing others

  2. Humility in recognizing our own weaknesses

  3. Mercy toward those who fail

When these become part of our lives, we grow into the character of Christ. The message of Jesus is clear. God does not want critical hearts, but compassionate hearts.

Lent is a sacred opportunity to remove the plank from our eyes so that we may see clearly and love deeply. When we humble ourselves before God, He transforms our hearts and makes us instruments of His grace. Amen.

Final Takeaway

Before judging others, examine your own heart; when the heart is purified by repentance, it will respond to others with mercy rather than condemnation.
