Day-16  Persistence in Prayer

Beloved, the Gospel of Matthew 7:7–11 says, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.”

These powerful words reveal an important spiritual principle: persistence in seeking God. During Lent, as we meditate on the cross and examine our spiritual lives, this passage reminds us not to give up on prayer, faith, or hope.

1. Persistence Begins with Asking

Jesus begins with a simple command: Ask. Prayer is not a one-time request; it is a continual conversation with God. Many believers pray once and become discouraged if the answer does not come immediately. But Jesus teaches that prayer requires faithful persistence.

During Lent, we remember that even in His suffering, Christ continued to pray. Likewise, our spiritual journey requires repeated seeking of God's presence. Every prayer strengthens our relationship with Him.

2. Persistence Requires Seeking

The second word Jesus uses is Seek. Seeking means intentional effort. It involves: searching God's will through Scripture, longing for His presence, and pursuing righteousness

Lent is a season of spiritual seeking. When we fast, pray, and meditate, we are actively searching for God’s transforming grace. Those who truly seek God will discover that He is never far away.

3. Persistence Means Knocking

The third expression is Knock. Knocking suggests determination and patience. When a door does not open immediately, we do not walk away, we continue knocking.

In life, some doors seem closed: unanswered prayers, delayed blessings, and difficult circumstances. Yet Jesus assures us that the door will be opened. God's timing may differ from ours, but His faithfulness never fails.

4. The Confidence of a Loving Father

Jesus then gives a beautiful illustration: if earthly parents give good gifts to their children, how much more will our heavenly Father give good things to those who ask Him. This reminds us that persistence in prayer is not begging an unwilling God. Instead, we are approaching a loving Father who desires to bless His children.

During Lent, we see the greatest proof of this love—the cross. God gave His Son for our salvation. If He has given the greatest gift, we can trust Him for every other need.

Persistence deepens our faith. When we continue asking, seeking, and knocking, our faith becomes stronger, our dependence on God grows, and our hearts align with His will

Often, the greatest miracle of persistent prayer is not just the answer, but the transformation of the one who prays.

Never stop praying, seeking, and trusting God. Persistent faith opens doors that discouragement would keep closed. In this Lenten season, let us continue to ask with faith, seek with devotion, and knock with perseverance, knowing that our loving Father hears every prayer. Amen.
