D23 / True Purity Begins Within

Day - 23 "True Purity Begins Within"

Beloved in Christ, during this sacred season of Lent, we often focus on outward practices such as fasting, prayer, and giving. These are important. But in Mark 7:14–23, Jesus takes us deeper, and he challenges us to look beyond external religion and examine the condition of our hearts.

Because the truth is, this God is not only concerned with what we do outwardly, but with who we are inwardly.

1. The Misunderstanding of Purity

People believed that impurity came from external things, such as what one eats, touches, or associates with. But Jesus turns this thinking upside down. He says, “Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”

This is revolutionary. Purity is not about external rituals, cultural traditions, or religious appearances. Purity is about the heart. Lent calls us to move from external performance to Internal transformation.

2. The Source of Impurity: The Human Heart

Jesus explains clearly, “For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come.” He lists things like Evil thoughts, sexual immorality, greed, malice, deceit, envy, and pride. These are not accidents. They are not caused by outside forces. They come from within.

This truth humbles us. We cannot blame others. We cannot blame circumstances. We must face our own hearts. Lent is a mirror, and it shows us what is really inside.

3. The Danger of Outward Religion Without Inner Change

It is possible to pray regularly, fast sincerely, and give generously. And still have a heart far from God. Outward religion without inward purity leads to hypocrisy. spiritual pride, and Self-deception. Jesus is not impressed by appearance; He desires authenticity.

4. The Call to Inner Cleansing

If impurity comes from within, then cleansing must also begin within. But here is the good news, we are not left to clean our hearts by ourselves. God invites us to confess honestly, repent sincerely, and surrender completely.

Psalm-like prayer becomes our cry, “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” During Lent, we must allow God to search our hearts, remove hidden sins, and renew our inner life.

5. The Work of Grace: Transformation from Inside Out

True purity is not behaviour modification, it is heart transformation. When God changes the heart, thoughts become pure, words become gracious, and actions become righteous. A clean heart produces a clean life.

6. The Invitation Go Deeper

Lent is not about looking better; it is about becoming new. Ask yourself  What is hidden in my heart? What needs to be surrendered? Where do I need God’s cleansing?

God is not asking for perfection; He is asking for honesty. Jesus reminds us that the greatest battle is not outside us, it is within us. But He also assures us the same God who reveals the heart can renew it. So this Lent, do not stop at outward discipline. Go deeper. Let God transform your heart. Amen.

Final Takeaway

“True purity is not about outward practices, but inward transformation. When God cleanses your heart, your life will reflect His holiness.”
