D29 / “The Way Up is Down”

Day 29  “The Way Up is Down”

Beloved, in Lent, we have to walk with Christ not only to the cross, but into a transformed life. One of the most countercultural teachings of Jesus is found in Luke 14:7–11, where He speaks about humility at a banquet. In a world that constantly tells us to promote ourselves, elevate ourselves, and secure the best seat, Jesus offers a radically different path: choose the lowest place, and let God lift you up.

1. The Danger of Self-Exaltation

Jesus observes how people were choosing places of honour at the table. This was not just about seating, it was about status, pride, and recognition. Self-exaltation is subtle. It can appear in the desire to be noticed, the need to be praised, or the habit of comparing ourselves with others.

Pride whispers: “I deserve this place.” But Jesus warns that such thinking leads to humiliation. When we lift ourselves, we place ourselves in competition with others and even with God.

2. The Beauty of Choosing the Lower Place

Jesus teaches: “When you are invited, take the lowest place.” This is not about self-rejection, but about God-centered humility. It means letting go of entitlement, serving without expecting recognition, and trusting God with your worth and position. Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less. When we choose the lower place, we become teachable, we become compassionate, we become Christ-like

Remember, Jesus Himself took the lowest place, born in a manger, serving the broken, and dying on a cross.

3. The Promise of Divine Exaltation

Jesus concludes with a powerful principle “For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” This is a spiritual law of the Kingdom of God. The world says, “Climb higher.” Jesus says, “Bow lower.”

And here is the hope: When we humble ourselves, God Himself lifts us up in His time, in His way, for His glory.

4. Humility in the Lenten Journey

Lent is the perfect season to practice humility. In prayer, we surrender our will to God. In fasting, one denies the self for spiritual growth. In service, putting others before ourselves.

Ask yourself, Where am I seeking recognition? Where do I need to step back and let God take control? How can I serve quietly this week?

Humility is not weakness; it is strength under God’s control. It is the doorway to grace, transformation, and true honour. When we walk the humble path, we walk the path of Christ. Amen.

Final Takeaway

Choose the lower place, trust God with your position, and He will lift you at the right time
