D39 / Obedience: The Evidence of Love
Day - 39 Obedience: The Evidence of Love
Jesus gives us a clear and powerful answer in John 14:15, "If you love me, keep my commandments."
This statement is simple, yet deeply challenging. Jesus connects love and obedience. Not fear. Not an obligation. Not ritual. But love is expressed through obedience. We are invited not just to feel love for Christ, but to live it through obedience.
Jesus did not say, "If you love me, sing songs." He did not say, "If you love me, attend gatherings." He did not even say, "If you love me, talk about me." He said, "If you love me, keep my commandments."
True love is demonstrated through action. A child shows love by listening to their parent. A friend shows love by being faithful. A disciple shows love by obeying the Master. Obedience is not punishment; it is a relationship.
When we obey God, we choose forgiveness instead of bitterness. We choose humility instead of pride. We choose generosity instead of selfishness. We choose truth instead of compromise.
Every act of obedience says, "Lord, I love You more than my comfort." Lent is the perfect season to ask where is God asking me to obey? What is God asking me to surrender?
Jesus makes a beautiful promise in John 14:16–17, "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, the Spirit of truth." Obedience opens the door for God's presence.
When we obey, the Holy Spirit strengthens us, guides us, comforts us and transforms us. Obedience is not something we do alone. God gives us His Spirit to help us live faithfully.
Obedience can be difficult. Forgiving is hard. Serving is hard. Sacrificing is hard. But we are not alone. God walks with us.
Jesus continues in John 14:21, "Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me, and I too will love them and show myself to them." This is powerful. Obedience leads to greater intimacy with Christ. The more we obey, the more we understand God's heart. The more we experience His peace. The more we grow spiritually. The more we become like Christ. Obedience becomes the pathway to transformation.
Jesus never asks us to do what He has not done. He obeyed, in the wilderness, in suffering, in rejection, in Gethsemane, and on the cross. Even when obedience led to sacrifice, Jesus chose the Father's will. We remember, Jesus obeyed unto death. Jesus obeyed for our salvation. Jesus obeyed because of love. If Christ obeyed for us. We can obey out of love for Him.
Jesus concludes with reassurance, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you." Obedience brings peace because we are aligned with God's will. We trust God's wisdom. We surrender our worries. Disobedience brings confusion, and obedience brings clarity. Disobedience brings restlessness, and Obedience brings peace. Obedience becomes our path to inner peace. Small acts of obedience lead to big spiritual growth. Amen.
Obedience is not about rules; it is about a relationship. When we obey Christ, we demonstrate our love, experience His presence, grow deeper in faith, and walk in His peace. Let us choose obedience not out of fear, but out of love.
Because true love for Jesus is always seen in a life of obedience.
