D40 / The Mission That Defines US
Day - 40 The Mission That Defines Us
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Lent is a season of purpose and preparation for mission. Jesus did not call His disciples simply to follow Him. He called them to continue His mission.
Matthew 28:16–20, often called The Great Commission, is not just the ending of Matthew's Gospel; it is the beginning of the Church's mission. Because Jesus has authority, we are called to go, make disciples, and live in His presence.
"Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee. When they saw Him, they worshipped Him; but some doubted." This verse is incredibly encouraging. The disciples saw the risen Christ, worshipped Him, and yet some still doubted. Even in the presence of the resurrected Jesus, there was still doubt.
This teaches us something powerful. God does not wait for perfect people to accomplish His mission. They were not fearless. They were not confident. They were not fully certain. Yet Jesus still entrusted them with the greatest mission in history.
You may feel spiritually weak. You may feel uncertain. You may feel unworthy. But God still calls you. Mission does not begin with perfection; it begins with surrender.
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me." Before Jesus gives the command, He establishes His authority. This means Jesus has authority over heaven, earth, life and death. This is crucial because the mission is not based on our ability, but on His authority.
We don't go in our strength, wisdom, and power. We go in Christ's authority. We remember that Jesus defeated sin. Jesus defeated death. Jesus finished the work. Therefore, when we step into the mission, we are stepping into victory already won.
Mission is not fighting for victory. Mission is living from victory.
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations." The first word of the mission is Go. Jesus did not say, " Stay and wait, sit and observe and be comfortable." He said Go.
Mission requires stepping out of comfort. Moving toward people. Crossing boundaries. Sometimes "Go" means going to your family, to your workplace, to your neighbours, and going to the broken and wounded.
Mission is not only overseas. Mission is wherever God has placed you. Mission begins with seeing people the way Jesus sees them.
"Make disciples, baptising them. Teaching them to obey. " Jesus did not say, Make followers. Make believers. Make attendees. He said Make disciples. A disciple is someone who learns from Jesus. Follows Jesus. Lives like Jesus.
Mission is not just sharing the gospel once. Inviting someone to church. Mission is walking with people. Teaching them. Encouraging them. Helping them to grow. Mission is relational.
Jesus spent time with people. Ate with people. Had conversation with people. That is still the mission today. During Lent, we are called not only to grow ourselves spiritually, but to help others grow as well.
"And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." This is one of the most comforting promises in Scripture. Jesus did not say go alone, try your best, and figure it out. He said I am with you always. This means when you feel afraid, He is with you. When you feel weak, He is with you. When you feel uncertain, He is with you. Mission is never done alone.
The same Jesus who walked on water calmed storms. Raised the dead and Conquered death. That same Jesus is with you today. This changes everything. We don't go in fear. We go in confidence.
Lent prepares us for the cross, the resurrection, and the mission. Jesus gave His life not only to save us, but to send us. We are saved for a purpose. Redeemed for a mission. Called to make a difference
Your mission may be to encourage someone. Serving someone. Sharing hope. Living Christ-like love. Mission is not always loud; sometimes, mission is also being silent in faithfulness. Amen.
Because Jesus has all authority and promises to be with us, we are called to live on mission, making disciples, sharing hope, and bringing Christ's love to the world. We are saved. We are called. We are sent. Mission is not for a few; it is for all believers.
Go in faith. Serve in love. Make disciples. And remember, Jesus is always with you.
